Notes for ZEBULON LEWIS (*) SLEDGE: By Jan Payne 4-26-2003
The Sledge family is of English ancestry and came to America in colonial days. The method of obtaining land in colonial times, other than purchase, was the head-right system. Those who paid passage from England received fifty acres plus an additional fifty for each member of the family or anyone whose passage they had paid. Sledge families acquired tracts ranging from 250 to 400 acres. Several Sledges fought in the American Revolution and some were present at the British surrender at Yorktown. These families settled in North Carolina, Virginia and later in Tennessee.
In 1839 fourteen people started to Sangamon County, Illinois. They were: Burrell Warren, wife Mary (Redford) Warren and eight children; John Freeman Walker and wife Polly (Warren) Walker; Zebulon Sledge and wife Sarah (Warren) Sledge. The night they camped near the old Limestone Church west of Mount. Vernon, two of the boys died. Mary Warren refused to go farther and is responsible for the Warren and Sledge families settling in Jefferson County, Illinois.
Zebulon L. Sledge descended from Charles Sledge, who came from England to the Jamestown Colony in Virginia in 1686, and his wife Mary Clark, (daughter of Robert Clark), through their son, John Sledge who married Mary Rebecca Ivey, through their son, Charles Sledge who married Elizabeth Sammons, through their son, John Sledge and through his son John L. Sledge, Zebulon's father.
Zebulon was born in Williamson County, Tennessee, in 1814, the youngest child of John L. Sledge, b. 1772, and his second wife, Lucretia Connel, daughter of Arthur Connel, a Revolutionary War veteran from North Carolina, who moved from Bedford County, Virginia to Williamson County, Tennessee, in 1810. Zebulon married Sarah Nancy Warren in Tennessee and they, along with one infant son, John W., came to Jefferson County in 1837 and settled in Farmington Twp. They came with Burrell Warren family, Sarah's parents.
All people of the Sledge name living in the county now are descendants of Zebulon and Sarah Sledge. Zebulon and Sarah came with one infant son John W. to Jefferson County in 1837 and settled in Farrington Township. They came with the Burrell Warren family, Sarah's parents.
Zebulon married a second time to Jane M. Dawson, her third marriage. She had two Tucker children and two Harlow children from her previous marriages. Zeb and Jane had two children. Following the death of his second wife, Zeb loaded a covered wagon, took his two young sons and went west to the Indian territory to visit his daughters. In 1882, he decided to return to Jefferson County and on the way back he got a severe cold and died at Muldrow, Oklahoma, ten miles west of Fort Smith, Arkansas. The boys buried their father and went back to Duncan, Oklahoma, to live with their aunt and uncle, Lucinda and John Stitch.
Zebulon Sledge and Mr. Harlow hewed the logs to build a Baptist Church. This building is still standing. Sheds have been added, and used as a barn, for the past 100 years, this building is on the Harlow Farm. About one mile south east of the present day East Salem church. The logs were black walnut and when last seen by this writer were in a perfect state of preservation. ---------------------------------------------------------
