Research Notes:
Martha J. Yandell was living in La Fave twp, Scott Co. AR in 1850 with her father Jesse W. Yandell and three brothers. She was listed on the census as being Mary J. Yandell. Her mother had apparently already died at that time. Stephen H. Vaughn was also living in Hickman twp, Scott Co at age 17 and working and living with another family. I believe Martha met Stephen through her cousin Susan Yandell, who was married to Stephen's brother William R. Vaughn. She and Stephen may or may not have married but did have two children--William Washington Vaughn and C. A. Vaughn before 1860. W.W. Vaughn was born Oct 16, 1855 and C. A. was born about 1859. Apparently, C. A. Vaughn died as a child as he was not listed on the 1870 Arkansas census with Martha and her new husband Charlie Wright. Several of her brother William's children, William Washington Vaughn and her children by Charles Wright were listed. Will Vaughn had always told his children that his dad had gone off to the Civil War when he, Will was six or seven years old and had never returned. Stephen H. Vaughn joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and was killed in Sept, 1863 at the Battle of Chicamauga in Georgia. Martha apparently moved to Franklin Co. AR by 1860 and was living with her brother William Yandell and family who lived next door to Charles Wright and his brothers and sisters. She had a daughter Mary by him in 1862, so was either divorced from Stephen Vaughn or had not been married to him. Court records were destroyed in fires in Scott and Polk Counties, Arkansas so it is almost impossible to verify whether marriages did take place or not.
Martha married Stephen H Vaughn, son of Obediah Vaughn Jr and Nancy Vaughan, about 1854 in Scott County, Arkansas. (Stephen H Vaughn was born about 1832 in Miller County, Missouri and died on 19 Sep 1863 in Chicamauga, GA.) The cause of his death was Thigh wound at Battle of Chicamauga, GA.
Martha next married Charles Wright about 1861 in Franklin County, AR.
