Donald Keith Grundon graduated from Salem Community High School in IL. In 1943 he was inducted into the Army Nov 17, 1943 and entered service Dec the 7th. He took his basic training at Camp Blanding, FL with the 45th Division, 189th Infantry, Company F. He departed for Italy July 1, 1944 and arrived there July 15, 1944. His troops moved through Italy and France where he was wounded in action Sept 12, 1944 and taken prisoner by the German forces on the same date. He was held at Camp 2b and 5b at Villagen, Germany and in Poland. He was released with the rank of PFC and arrived in the US on June 21, 1945. He was assigned to Camp Stoneman, CA. where he was hospitalized with jaundice and shrapnel wounds. He was discharged from service March 8, 1946. He re-enlisted in the Army March 19, 1947 and took Vehicle Mechanics course at Alanta, Ga. He was then sent to 75th Ordance Battalion in Hawaii then transfered to 531st Quartermaster in Fort Bragg, NC untill discharged in 1950 with the rank of S/Sgt. After his military service he worked for the Caterpillar Company untill Oct of 1952, then he went to McDonnell Aircraft Company in St. Louis MO for the next 33 years, retiring in Feb. 1986. After he retired he moved to Centralia, IL and resided enjoying his fishing.
